Not “holding it together.” Not performing. Not managing everyone else’s emotions while you swallow your own.
What wholeness looks in your real life:
You walk into the meeting without the 9 pm prep spiral the night before.
You say “no” without rehearsing it for three days.
The hard thing gets named in the room — and the room is better for it.
A senior person’s pushback lands, gets considered, and doesn’t follow you home.
You end the work day at a reasonable hour because the work got done by the person whose work it was.
You walk in your front door present — not braced, not brittle, not numb.

Less over-functioning, less over-preparing, less recovering. More clear, steady leadership that doesn’t cost you your evenings.

More capacity for honest conversations — naming what’s real without smoothing, shrinking, or spiraling afterward.

Quiet the inner “too much / not enough” voice and move with more courage, clarity, and conviction.

What Happened to Us is a leadership program for change-makers who want to increase their effectiveness and impact — by addressing the root of what keeps getting in the way.
You’ll learn a language for something we all experienced but were never given a name for: adultism — the oppression of young people that convinced us our voices counted less (or were best when not heard at all), our feelings were inconvenient, our bodies belonged to someone else, and being "good" meant being small and obedient.
Adultism interrupted the natural healing process every child is born with. In its place, we built the patterns that have been running our leadership, our relationships, and our nervous systems ever since.
This program helps you recognize those patterns for what they are (not personality flaws and not your fault), understand where they came from, and begin shifting them — so your leadership and life stop being organized around survival.

Many participants describe the recognition of adultism as life-transforming — not because it’s a label or an excuse, but because it finally gives language for what happened, compassion for why the patterns exist, and a clear direction for healing.
This life-altering and life-affirming program includes live sessions, self-guided activities, and a commitment to meet weekly with one other person from the program using our transformative healing practice, all with support from the LJIST team of guides.

What Happened to Us is intended to offer self reflection and healing. It does not disappoint! If you are looking for a journey to healing, this is a great program that infuses new concepts, sheds light on existing frameworks and truly makes you dig deep. Enjoy the ride.

Joanna Turner
Non-Profit Program Director

This program has given me practical ways to actually "do my work". I actually have tools to aid in my healing journey and can already see the ways it is positively impacting my interactions with others.

Lina Translavinia Stover
Non-Profit Executive Director

This was the most dynamic and intentional program I have attended. The level of engagement that Nanci and her team accomplishes is astonishing. Like magic, the group had deep discussions about oppression and leadership almost instantly.

And More!
We’re so glad you asked! We've compiled answers to frequently asked questions about the program, including participant commitments, session platform, recording, and more.
Here is a list of the Program commitments which ensure you and your fellow participants get the most from the experience:
Attend all three (3) live virtual sessions in their entirety: all two hours on all three days. Note: In the event of emergencies or limited unavoidable scheduling conflicts, we allow participants to miss up to 1.5 total hours across the three sessions. We don’t recommend missing any of the live sessions since your presence is part of building community and watching recordings of the parts you missed is a poor substitute for the live experience.
If a participant misses more than 1.5 of the 6 hours, we will kindly ask you to attend a future offering instead of completing this one.
Complete approximately 1.5-2.5 hours of pre-work: watching short videos, reviewing handouts or supporting materials, and/or completing reflections. Pre-work will be shared no later than 7 days before the first live session.
Complete approximately 30-60 minutes of homework between sessions: watching short videos, reviewing handouts or supporting materials, and/or completing reflections.
Complete a weekly 30-minute Listening Session with an assigned partner from the program using Constructivist Listening and following the prompts in your workbook.
Cameras On: LJIST requires that participants have camera and microphone capabilities to attend LJIST virtual sessions. We will build an intimate space together and having videos on builds trust and allows participants to be vulnerable with one another and the LJIST team.
Private Space: We ask all participants to come prepared to mutually hold the confidentiality of what will be shared in our session together. We ask participants not to driver, multitask (do other work) or be in shared spaces with people not registered for the session except in the case of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances. We also request that you do not share the Zoom link with others.
Agree to our LJIST Limited Media and Liability Waiver in the registration form.
Please contact us at [email protected] if you have questions about commitments that are not answered in the FAQs.
In the event of emergencies or limited unavoidable scheduling conflicts, we allow participants to miss up to 1.5 total hours across the 3 live sessions. We don’t recommend missing any of the live sessions since your presence is part of building community and watching recordings of the parts you missed is a poor substitute for the live experience.
If a participant misses more than 1.5 of the 6 hours, we will kindly ask you to attend a future offering instead of completing this one.
The Participant Orientation and Preparation Site (POPS) is your LJIST guide. Everything you need to know about the session, including logistics information, pre-work, homework resources, and evaluation can be found on your POPS.
You will have access to the POPS for approximately one week before the first live session and for one week after the final live session.
Most LJIST handouts and videos are only viewable on your POPS, and not downloadable. While your POPS is open you have unlimited access to (re)viewing these videos and handouts. We encourage you to take full advantage of these resources for the time that you have access to them!
Some additional resources are downloadable. Look for the “PDF” symbol to locate downloadable documents.
We have tried to keep the pre-work to 1.5-2.5 hours and homework to 30-60 minutes between the live sessions.*
Ideally, participants will have 1 week to complete the pre-work. Pre-work will consist of reviewing logistical information, preparing and submitting participant introductions, watching videos and reviewing handouts, and completing pre-work reflections.
Homework will consist of watching videos, reviewing handouts, completing reflections, etc.
You will also be asked to complete a weekly 30-minute Listening Session with your assigned partner between live sessions.
We've designed each exercise for easy completion and maximum impact. Your fine, brilliant, zestful mind will enjoy the opportunity and challenge to think about these issues! Your asynchronous thinking will deepen the overall experience for you and fellow participants during the program.
*Not including the Listening Partnership commitment.
Please review our Waiver FAQ for detailed information about how we use the waiver and the covered media.
We use Zoom as our main meeting space for the live session. Please download the latest version of Zoom here. We will use “Break Out Rooms” during our sessions as well. We ask all participants to have working audio and video for every session.
Your registration confirmation will include the Zoom login information and we will send periodic reminders with the link leading up to the live sessions.
The Participant Orientation & Preparation Site (POPS) includes additional Zoom information and resources which we hope you will make use of!
Register by Friday, October 2.
Yes. We will record the live sessions for internal use only. We do not record confidential sharing in the large group or in the breakout rooms.
Recordings may be shared with participants who miss part of a session(s) (within our attendance policy, see the FAQ What are Participant Commitments?).
We provide closed captioning to all our sessions through an automated AI service. We do not allow participants to download transcripts nor share transcripts with anyone.
To protect participant confidentiality, we do not allow the use of AI-meeting assistants in our workshops.
We do not interpret our live sessions. However, we may be able to use auto-translated closed captions to support participation in another language. Please contact our office at [email protected] to discuss this.
All participants are encouraged to use the Constructivist Listening practice in their heart language.
We will create a WhatsApp group for our participants and facilitators to connect, ask and answer questions, and get support during the program.
We will collect your WhatsApp number during registration and invite you to the group approximately one week before the start of the first live session.
If you don’t currently have WhatsApp, you can download it for your phone through the Google Play or Apple Store. Once you have created your account on your phone, you can use your phone or computer desktop using WhatsApp for the web. Click here to learn more about this option.
We collect information about each participant in our registration form to create partnerships based on shared constituency, language, field/profession, and other factors. While there is no such thing as a "wrong" Listening Partner, your answers will help us match you with someone you can fully use this practice with to get the most benefits from this transformative program.
If you are registering with someone you'd like to be matched with, and both parties have confirmed you want to be Listening Partners with each other, there is a space to indicate this in the registration form as well. (We will only match you if you have both put each other's name in that space on the registration form.)
Listening Partnerships are the core healing practice and an essential part of the overall What Happened to Us experience. Your commitment to these weekly sessions is essential to you getting the most out of this experience—and ensuring your Listening Partner will as well. (See What are Participant Commitments? FAQ for more details)
Please know this is not an “optional” or “add-on” to this program. When you register to participate, this is your commitment to fulfill this aspect of the program. This workshop experience and the community we are creating around it, won’t work if you don’t show up for these weekly dyads with your Listening Partner. Thank you in advance for taking this aspect of the program seriously.
Refunds will not be given for this program, but registration can be transferred to another participant or to a future LJIST offering (to be used within 1 calendar year of the extension date).
Our on-demand webinar Stopping the Cycle of Oppression includes 60-minutes of learning from What Happened to Us.

“A just world requires us to heal from internalized adultism that left us feeling discouraged, hopeless, helpless, powerless, and/or waiting for someone else.”
