Reclaim Your Resiliency, Reconnect with Your Joy
Our free Community Resilience Gatherings support connected healing for a just world.
If you’ve landed on this page, you’re committed to being part of creating a more just world. You’re already making a difference but maybe you're unsatisfied with your effectiveness, disheartened by plaguing self-doubt, or unhappy with the current state of your life and relationships.
We’re so glad you’re here!
If you’re working for change, regardless of your title in your workplace, you’re leading. Leaders, whether in formal positions or not, encounter distinct challenges in creating the impact they desire.
Are you...
✔️ Feeling siloed, disconnected, isolated, and transactional in your leadership?
✔️ Feeling burned out or ineffective, working harder yet seeing fewer results and feeling less reward for the amount of effort?
✔️ In a role that needs to bring people together, but it's become increasingly difficult across our seemingly impassable societal divides and lack of trust?
✔️ Seeking a less divisive and more healing approach to lasting social change?
✔️ Hoping to be seen, valued, and understood by people who don’t think like you or have different life experiences while needing new tools to see, value, and understand these very same people?
✔️ Looking for both validation of how hard it's been as well as a fresh perspective to reconnect to your "why"?
✔️ Exhausted by people you lead projecting their unresolved hurts with their parents onto you bringing simultaneously old disappointments and unrealistic expectations of you (which, admittedly, you sometimes get tempted into fulfilling at a high personal cost)?
✔️ Struggling to stay connected to friends, colleagues, or loved ones because of differences and disagreements in political or social justice beliefs?
✔️ Hoping to find or re-establish your place in the movements to end injustice and transform our world?
If you’ve answered “yes” to any of these questions, we’re not alone!
There is real transformative support and community here for you! Keep reading!
MEET YOUR GUIDE
My journey began when I attended a community workshop led by Lillian Roybal Rose. She became my mentor, friend, and, over decades of working together, familia. When I heard her say, "No movement you are a part of will be any healthier than you are," I initially felt defensive. Over time, it caused me to reflect and I could see the truth in her assertion.
My unhealed pain motivated me to action. I mistook passion for purpose and confused these feelings for the “why” behind my leadership. The emotional hurts I carried were mostly invisible to me (that’s just how I rolled, that was my personality) yet very visible and impactful on those around me, especially the people I was leading. I was replicating my hurt in my leadership. In spite of what I wanted and believed I was working toward, I was leading with my pain and the outcomes showed it.
By committing to my own healing, I soon embraced the perspective that healing-centered leadership is central, not incidental, to embodying and realizing the just world I envisioned. And while my healing started with me, it didn’t end with me and couldn’t be limited to me. I could now see that reflective, self-aware, emotional healing was the missing piece in social change work and our leaders needed a theory of change, set of practices, and support to live into these values.
Over the past three decades, I’ve developed and implemented a Healing-Engaged Leadership curriculum that empowers everyone to see themselves as leaders; supports leaders to be their authentic, connected, human selves; and apply that assurance in increasingly insightful, innovative, and impactful actions.
What Happened to Us brings together my foundational teachings based on what I learned from Lillian. Those teachings are as cutting-edge and relevant today as they were when I started this journey. Are you ready to join me and thousands of others, who have already said “yes,” on this transformative journey toward a more healed-world, starting with you?
Imagine This...
Imagine being so grounded in who you are, having such clarity in your “why,” and thoughtfully connected to supportive community you never even knew was possibly that you are no longer thrown (or at least, not for long!) by systemic obstacles or interpersonal conflicts. Instead, you flexibly and authentically connect deeply with diverse individuals, navigate complex emotional situations with assurance, and show up unthreatened by systemic barriers or organized attacks.
This could be your truth.
✨ You wake up feeling empowered, confident, and aligned with your authentic self.
✨ You lead flexibly with clarity, purpose, and a deep sense of fulfillment.
✨ You have a supportive network of like-minded leaders who understand your journey and cheer you on every step of the way.
✨ You are no longer hindered by self-doubt nor external judgments, but instead, you navigate challenges with resilience and grace.
✨ You regularly tap into a joy that has recently felt like a dim and distant memory.
What participants are saying
This workshop was the most dynamic and intentional workshop I have attended. The level of engagement that Nanci and her team accomplish is astonishing. Like magic, the group had deep discussions about oppression and leadership almost instantly.
This workshop was more impactful than I could have ever imagined. It provided me with new insights into my own internalized oppression and tools to work through the patterns that emerge from it.
I came to a place of tides turning... rejecting socialization and shifting toward liberation. It’s given me a space to forgive the past me who "allowed" such influence from others and even more space to dream and honor and live fully into my own story.

What participants are saying
I was utterly delighted with the methods taught and see how they can help society as a whole change if more and more people practice this method for healing and growing.
I appreciate your shame and guilt free approach to teaching this. Going back to the core of our humanity is important for those who have gotten stuck in the generational cycle of oppression.
I’m just so blown away by this whole experience and feel almost speechless. It was profound and life changing, and the facilitators were exceptional.
What Would It Be Worth to You…
What would it be worth to you to reconnect to your authentic, heal the harms that continue to trip you up in your leadership, and navigate your personal and professional relationships with empathy and confidence—all while contributing to societal transformation?
Leaders invest significant time and financial resources in their development. While these programs can cost upwards of $10k-$50k annually, many of them offer temporary fixes, short-term benefits, or transactional strategies, at best.
Why settle for this when you know deserve more?
We offer a more holistic, efficacious, and sustainable solution, one that addresses the root causes of what limits your effectiveness and keeps you stuck in a cycle that no longer serves you or the change you want to be a part of!
What Happened to Us is designed specifically for leaders to address underlying, systemic challenges with healing and vulnerability, while providing sustainable, transformational benefits.
Investing in What Happened to Us is investing in yourself.
You are worth the investment! You get to claim a life and lead as the best version of yourself—and, despite whatever messages to the contrary you may have internalized, you and the world will benefit from it!

Who What Happened to Us is For/Not For
This could be your chance to embody a transformative shift towards greater authenticity, connection, and healing in your leadership and life. Continue reading to see if this program is aligned for you to (re)emerge as the social change leader you were always, already born to be!
This program is for any who:
✔️ Is open to the process of transformation
✔️ (Wants to) embrace vulnerability as part of your leadership
✔️ Is willing to do hard, even scary, things
✔️ Seek a community of leaders, where you get and give support
✔️ Can free up your schedule to fully participate in the live sessions and honor your weekly commitment to your Listening Partner (even when it gets hard or scary, see above ☝🏽)
✔️ Understand that oppression is impacting your life and want a way to heal from it—for good!

✔️ Keep your commitments, even when it’s not easy to do so
✔️ Ready to get “unstuck” and off the hamster wheel 🛞of oppression
✔️ Value social justice and equity in your leadership!
This program is not for you if you:
❌ Want a checklist or quick fix
❌ Think the problems or challenges you are facing are only external (outside of you)
❌ Are resistant to doing emotional healing in community
❌ Intellectualize the harms of oppression as a way to justify or explain, instead of being able to engage in the affective release of these harms
❌ Are protective of your parent(s) to the point where it’s unlikely you can admit to experiencing harm through them or acknowledge the impact of their patterns on you
❌ Don’t feel ready to commit fully to all aspects of the program
❌ Know you won’t follow through when things get hard (struggling is OK!)
❌ Don’t think oppression has impacted you
❌ Feel attached or defended around the patterns of behavior that you employ regularly in your leadership, even when they don’t work as you had hoped
❌ Are uninterested in examining institutional power and social injustice
What participants are saying
After I do this practice, I become more myself. It's both familiar, like I already know it and I learn something new every time!
This listening practice broke me...in a good way. I find every time I do it I'm more authentic, more me.
Don't let this opportunity pass. The world needs more leaders like you who are committed to engaging in their healing and transformation!
What are the participant commitments?
Here is a list of the Program commitments which ensure you and your fellow participants get the most from the experience:
Attend all five (5) live virtual sessions in their entirety: all three hours on all five days. Note: In the event of emergencies or limited unavoidable scheduling conflicts, we allow participants to miss up to 3 total hours across the 5 sessions. We don’t recommend missing any of the live sessions since your presence is part of building community and watching recordings of the parts you missed is a poor substitute for the live experience.
If a participant misses more than 3 of the 15 hours, we will kindly ask you to attend a future offering instead of completing this one.
Complete approximately 1.5-2.5 hours of pre-work: watching short videos, reviewing handouts or supporting materials, and/or completing reflections. Pre-work will be shared no later than 7 days before the first live session.
Complete approximately 30-60 minutes of homework between sessions: watching short videos, reviewing handouts or supporting materials, and/or completing reflections.
Complete a weekly 30-minute Listening Session with an assigned partner from the program using Constructivist Listening and following the prompts in your workbook.
Cameras On: LJIST requires that participants have camera and microphone capabilities to attend LJIST virtual sessions. We will build an intimate space together and having videos on builds trust and allows participants to be vulnerable with one another and the LJIST team.
Private Space: We ask all participants to come prepared to mutually hold the confidentiality of what will be shared in our session together. We ask participants not to driver, multitask (do other work) or be in shared spaces with people not registered for the session except in the case of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances. We also request that you do not share the Zoom link with others.
Agree to our LJIST Limited Media and Liability Waiver in the registration form.
Please contact us at info@ljist.com if you have questions about commitments that are not answered in the FAQs.
What if I need to miss all or part of a live session?
In the event of emergencies or limited unavoidable scheduling conflicts, we allow participants to miss up to 3 total hours across the 5 live sessions. We don’t recommend missing any of the live sessions since your presence is part of building community and watching recordings of the parts you missed is a poor substitute for the live experience.
If a participant misses more than 3 of the 15 hours, we will kindly ask you to attend a future offering instead of completing this one.
What is Participant Orientation & Preparation Site?
The Participant Orientation and Preparation Site (POPS) is your LJIST guide. Everything you need to know about the session, including logistics information, pre-work, homework resources, and evaluation can be found on your POPS.
You will have access to the POPS for approximately one week before the first live session and for one week after the final live session.
Can I download the videos or handouts on the POPS?
Most LJIST handouts and videos are only viewable on your POPS, and not downloadable. While your POPS is open you have unlimited access to (re)viewing these videos and handouts. We encourage you to take full advantage of these resources for the time that you have access to them!
Some additional resources are downloadable. Look for the “PDF” symbol to locate downloadable documents.
How much pre-work and homework is there?
We have tried to keep the pre-work to 1.5-2.5 hours and homework to 30-60 minutes between the live sessions.*
Ideally, participants will have 1 week to complete the pre-work. Pre-work will consist of reviewing logistical information, preparing and submitting participant introductions, watching videos and reviewing handouts, and completing pre-work reflections.
Homework will consist of watching videos, reviewing handouts, completing reflections, etc.
You will also be asked to complete a weekly 30-minute Listening Session with your assigned partner between live sessions.
We've designed each exercise for easy completion and maximum impact. Your fine, brilliant, zestful mind will enjoy the opportunity and challenge to think about these issues! Your asynchronous thinking will deepen the overall experience for you and fellow participants during the workshop.
*Not including the Listening Partnership commitment.
Why do I need to sign a waiver?
Please review our Waiver FAQ for detailed information about how we use the waiver and the covered media.
What meeting platform do you use?
We use Zoom as our main meeting space for the live session. Please download the latest version of Zoom here. We will use “Break Out Rooms” during our sessions as well. We ask all participants to have working audio and video for every session.
Your registration confirmation will include the Zoom login information and we will send periodic reminders with the link leading up to the live sessions.
The Participant Orientation & Preparation Site (POPS) includes additional Zoom information and resources which we hope you will make use of!
Will the live sessions be recorded?
Yes. We will record the live sessions for internal use only. We do not record confidential sharing in the large group or in the breakout rooms.
Recordings may be shared with participants who miss part of a session(s) (within our attendance policy, see What are Participant Commitments? in the FAQ's section
Will the live sessions have closed captioning?
We provide closed captioning to all our sessions through an automated AI service. We do not allow participants to download transcripts nor share transcripts with anyone.
Can I use an AI assistant to record or take notes?
To protect participant confidentiality, we do not allow the use of AI-meeting assistants in our workshops.
Will the live sessions be interpreted?
We do not interpret our live sessions. However, we may be able to use auto-translated closed captions to support participation in another language. Please contact our office at info@ljist.com to discuss this.
All participants are encouraged to use the Constructivist Listening practice in their heart language.
How will WhatsApp be used?
We will create a WhatsApp group for our participants and facilitators to connect, ask and answer questions, and get support during the program.
We will collect your WhatsApp number during registration and invite you to the group approximately one week before the start of the first live session.
If you don’t currently have WhatsApp, you can download it for your phone through the Google Play or Apple Store. Once you have created your account on your phone, you can use your phone or computer desktop using WhatsApp for the web. Click here to learn more about this option.
How do you match Listening Partners?
We collect information about each participant in our registration form to create partnerships based on shared constituency, language, field/profession, and other factors. While there is no such thing as a "wrong" Listening Partner, your answers will help us match you with someone you can fully use this practice with to get the most benefits from this transformative program.
If you are registering with someone you'd like to be matched with, and both parties have confirmed you want to be Listening Partners with each other, there is a space to indicate this in the registration form as well. (We will only match you if you have both put each other's name in that space on the registration form.)
How important are the Listening Partnerships?
Listening Partnerships are the core healing practice and an essential part of the overall What Happened to Us experience. Your commitment to these weekly sessions is essential to you getting the most out of this experience—and ensuring your Listening Partner will as well. (See What are Participant Commitments? FAQ [MAKE HYPERLINK] for more details)
Please know this is not an “optional” or “add-on” to this workshop. When you register to participate, this is your commitment to fulfill this aspect of the program. This workshop experience and the community we are creating around it, won’t work if you don’t show up for these weekly dyads with your Listening Partner. Thank you in advance for taking this aspect of the program seriously.
Let’s start (or continue!) your transformational journey with LJIST today!
What would it be worth to you to have someone listen to you without interruption or judgment?
What would it mean to you to receive not only permission, but also encouragement and support to express and alleviate some of the harm caused by oppression and injustice?
What value would you place on learning a sustainable healing practice? A practice that could not only nurture your emotional well-being but also foster collective healing within your relationships and leadership?
How valuable would it be for you to lighten your burdens, reconnect with the joy that ignites your spirit, and reclaim your inherent resilience?
Would it be worth 45 minutes of your time?
That’s what this session costs.
Because you need to be present to heal (and heal to be present) we don’t offer recordings of these sessions. These are live sessions and we hope you’ll join us!
